In honor of #CaribbeanAmericanHeritageMonth, AF would like to shine a light on our amazing steel pan team at @afbrooklynhigh, @pulse.steelband. As the first high school steel pan band in New York City, this talented group has brought the sound and spirit of the Caribbean right to Brooklyn! This past year, Achievement First set off on an exciting journey to adopt and implement high-quality instructional materials that are proven to improve student outcomes. As we celebrate the last days of school and reflect on the incredible work of our scholars and teachers, we are thrilled to share this fantastic project led by Claudius Cooper, the talented music teacher at AF Iluminar Middle School. With a team of teachers and students, Claudius brought his extensive experience creating professional music videos to guide students through every step of the creative process. Students were involved in everything from writing lyrics and crafting the story to designing visuals, filming scenes, choreographing, and directing. Claudius even brought in outside experts to enhance the project. Watch the incredible result at the link in our bio!

Last week, Achievement First broke ground on the new extension for AF Iluminar in Cranston, Rhode Island. This expansion will offer our scholars a competition-sized gym, enrichment classrooms, and green spaces. We can’t wait to see our community thrive in this enhanced environment. We thank everyone who made this possible, including our incredible Iluminar school leadership, staff, students, families, KBA Architects, AF’s facilities, finance and external relations teams, and AF leadership!
